Personnel
Seth Shipman graduated from
Wesleyan University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and
Behavior. At the Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center, he strives to
develop valuable clinical skills and further his research background while
working on projects involving functional imaging and immersive virtual
reality. Eventually, he plans to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience.
Roles and Responsibilities include:
- Collection and analysis of
event-related functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data using UNIX
based Mathworks© Matlab 6.0 and Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM99 and
SPM2).
- Analysis of fMRI data using
Independent Component Analysis (ICA).
- Collection and analysis of
behavioral data involving
computer-simulated virtual worlds and spatial memory in both healthy and
clinical populations
Objectives/Interests in
Neuropsychiatry:
- Application
of virtual spatial memory tests to psychiatric groups with hippocampal
abnormalities, as well as healthy populations
- Furthering the use of virtual
reality as an investigative tool for human research as well as a diagnostic
tool for clinical psychology
- Examining
the effects of drugs of abuse and their treatments on memory processes and brain activity
- Determining
and analyzing the effects of gender and aging on memory processes,
especially spatial memory and navigation
- Identifying the neural correlates of
Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's Disease, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Current Projects:
- Study of spatial navigation using a virtual Morris Water
Maze and 8-arm radial maze.
- Independent Components Analysis (ICA) of fMRI data
relating to spatial orientation and navigation.
- Examination of the effects of cocaine on conditioned
place preference in virtual navigation.
- Study of the effects of Post-traumatic stress disorder on hippocampal-dependent learning and memory.
- Examination of hippocampal
function in people with schizophrenia using fMRI.
- fMRI examination of the role of the hippocampus in
associative memory.
