I have a computer with Windows already installed on it, how do I install DOS 6.22

This procedure was testing using Partition Magic 5.0 and Win98 SE. There will be minor variations for other versions of Partition Magic, and other versions of Windows.

First, install partition magic. Make the recovery diskettes as recommended, both for partition magic and bootmagic. Start bootmagic and disable it by unchecking the 'enabled' check-box at the bottom of the main bootmagic window.

Use partition magic to move the current partition 'up' on the hard drive to make enough room for a new partition somewhere below the 2Gb boundary. It can be anywhere from 100 Mb to 2 Gb long.

Create a PRIMARY FAT partition (NOT FAT32, and not a Logical partition) in the freed up space below 2 Gb. It is typical to start this as low as possible. If you forgot and created a logical partition instead, you can convert it to being a primary partition. It will be made 'hidden', this is necessary and cannot be changed. Format the new partition.

In Partition magic, set this to be the ACTIVE partition by right-clicking on it, and selecting from the advanced submenu. Note that partition magic will queue up the creation of the partition and the setting it to active and do both things when you click on 'apply changes'.

Reboot, you should get the 'non-system disk or disk error' message, which indicates that our newly created partition is the active partition and now appears as the c: drive. If you don't get that message, and instead just get a blank screen, put dos diskette1 in your floppy drive and try Alt-Ctl-Del to reboot.

Once you have successfully booted, you will be launched into the DOS setup program. To double-check that the correct hard drive partition is about to be loaded, use F3 to abort the setup, and use the dir command to confirm that your C: drive is completely empty (your windows drive will be invisible at this point) If it isn't empty, then you didn't successfully make the FAT16 partition active.

To resume the DOS installation, run SETUP from the A: drive.

As the boot progresses, you may get a message that your hard drive needs to be prepared for the OS, which will consist of deleting any existing partitions and replacing them with a DOS partition. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU ALLOW THIS TO PROCEED. If this happens,

  1. Exit the setup using F3
  2. Check that the c: drive is the empty 1 Gb partition that you created
  3. From the A: drive run SYS C:. This will transfer the basic system files to the root of the c: drive
  4. re-run the setup on the floppy drive. It should now give you a warning that this version of DOS is only intended for use with a new PC. Choose to overwrite the existing version of DOS, and then proceed with the rest of the installation.

Once DOS is installed and running, then put the bootmagic rescue diskette in the floppy drive and reboot with that. You should be given the chance to change the active partition back to your Windows partition. Do so.

When the machine reboots in Windows, run BootMagic and add the newly installed DOS partition as another boot choice. When you go to 'add' at the boot magic main window, you may need to check the 'advanced' box in order to see the DOS partition in the list.

You now have a dual-boot machine. Reboot to DOS and proceed with the installation of VAPP as described in the manual.
